She worked hard to adjust the trip according to our needs and wishes. I double-checked the reviews for all of the hotels Carmen chose and only had her re-arrange one hotel on relatively short notice to better suit our needs. She was responsive, available, and well informed, checking in with us most days by Whatsapp to ensure everything was going smoothly. Muchas gracias Carmen for all your hard work.

The trip in the Quito surroundings was at high altitude. We re-arranged the itinerary for better acclimatization, doing all the high altitude tours first. Carmen was helpful re-arranging one day of our tour as we were not feeling well and it meant that we got to see a wonderful art museum in Quito instead of a chocolate tour in Mindo. For the Quito area, you need to be aware that many destinations like Mindo Cloud Forest, Cotopaxi and Quilotoa Lagoon require travel by car for 2-3 hours one way and travel through Quito by car can be slow. Our guide Jean-Pierre was excellent and was assigned to us for our whole time in the Quito area. We stayed at the Hotel Dann Carlton Quito, Ilatoa Lodge and Hosteria Papgayo on this part of our trip and were happy with these choices.

Then we had four days in the Amazon jungle at Napo Wildlife Centre which was a once in a lifetime experience. Carmen mentioned that because of the higher cost of this part of our trip, she was careful to book other hotels so we didn’t exceed our budget.

Finally, we had 9 days in the Galapagos doing a land-based tour. Gulliver arranged the flight from Quito to the islands and got us premium economy tickets which was appreciated. We stayed at Casa Opuntia on San Cristobal Island, Hotel La Isla on Santa Cruz Island and the Volcano Hotel on Isabela Island and were happy with all of these choices. With a land based tour, you get a better feel for life on the islands but you need to be aware that there are a number of ferry rides in speedboats that are needed to go between islands. While in the Galapagos, a number of day tours were organized for us – snorkeling, kayaking, highlands tour, and a visit to an uninhabited island. 

Throughout the trip, our transfers and guides were always on time to greet us, help with luggage and get us to our next destination. The logistics went very smoothly.

We picked Gulliver Expeditions because they are local to Ecuador and wanted as much as possible to have a realistic visit to the country. We were not disappointed! read less

Jeremy took care of our booking after the original person-I charge of our account left the company. Well planned itinerary and we really felt at home and safe with our local guide in Quito with Jean Pierre. He provided all the historical touristy info of the attractions but was also tailor made our private trips to our needs and interests (eg. He brought us to try local lunch places when we preferred that over fancy restaurants.) 

On Galapagos there’s really no cell reception. This was the only hiccup we experienced. We were meant to get picked up by an English speaking personnel to relay to our Spanish speaking driver where we would like to go for the day on arrival at Santa Cruz pier. Only the driver showed up and due to language differences, we almost got scammed into booking a tour with a random tour agency there who said they would keep our bags for a fee of US10 and we had to pay extra for the driver to bring us to a tortoise conservation centre, when in fact we already had the driver paid for to bring us to where would like for half a day. 

Otherwise, once we met up with the rest of the group going on the cruise hours later, we had a fantastic time. On our Galapagos cruise with Millenium cruise, we had a wonderful guide, Javier. We had a safety drill on the night of our arrival, every evening he would go through the plan for the next day’s adventures and of course he was super sharp at pointing out wildlife on our hikes/snorkels. I’m usually quite nervous with snorkelling but I felt very safe that there are always 2 dingy boats around while we snorkel and I could always raise a hand up and go aboard if I felt like it. 

Hosteria papagayo in Cotopaxi was also such a beautiful, relaxing last part of our trip. This beautiful B&B provided such attentive care. Laurena and her colleague were fantastic, always making sure we were cosy by adding firewood to our fireplace, checking if we were good with drinks. 

Marco also provided a lovely horse ride for us on our last day in Ecuador. He even bought fresh strawberries from a farm that we passed during our ride to share during our picnic lunch and refused to let us pay for them. The picnic lunch was also a lot more than we expected (2sandwiches, 2whole fruits and a slice of delicious chocolate cake all prepped by Marco’s brother who is a chef at Hosteria Papagayo). read less

The first indication that they don’t pay attention to detail was the 47-page itinerary, which is full of repetition and poorly structured. It would have been helpful to know that what looked like short trips our first three days actually involved daily car rides through crawling traffic of five hours or more. The first three days we felt like we were in exactly what we were trying to get away from. We barely got to know our residences because we arrived so late it was dinner then bedtime. 

Much of the trip is at high altitude. The itinerary could be better arranged for acclimatization. We had three days at altitude and were adapting. Then three days in the lowland jungle. We had to adapt again when we returned to the highlands and the second day went to 4800 metres. Taking something like this into consideration separates the bespoke tours from the rest. 

On our return from the Amazon, we were picked up by a driver (not our guide) and deposited midday at our accommodation. We could not go anywhere. When I complained, I was told that the itinerary accounted for this. It is part of the plan that on a $1000 CDN/day holiday (all in) for one day we are supposed to get out the cards and enjoy our room. We felt abandoned. Our guide, it turns out, was with another party that day.

We originally selected flights to and from Quito. We were told that we had to depart from Guayaquil. We told Jeremy at Gulliver that we preferred to avoid Guayaquil, that departure times from there were much less convenient than from Quito and a few hundred dollars more expensive. We were told that it would take too long to drive back to Quito (8 hours) from Cuenca. Well, it took 5 hours to drive to Guayaquil. And there is an option. Several flights daily from Cuenca to Quito. Talking with out guide, I learned that all trips end in Guayaquil. An example of a routine replacing flexibility and choice.

Gulliver does a standard tour. All the usual places. We didn’t feel guided, more like conducted. We ran into groups more than once that were on the same circuit. Each day we were presented with a list of activities to choose from. We kept being offered types of activities we had previously turned down. Spontaneity did not seem part of the corporate culture and our guide did not seem to learn about us. Neither what Gulliver put together nor what we were offered took account of our interests: one tour fits all. Several activities were spectacular, many were mediocre; we wondered why some where on the list. 

Our guide was devoted, knew the territory, and drove with care. Perfect, except for one thing. He could not stop talking. As we drove for hours through fascinating landscapes, we had no time for our own thoughts and to enjoy this new world in silence. His strong, colourful voice dominated hikes and lunch. By the end of the trip, we had heard some of his personal stories – about family, prior guests, his preferences for music and cars, political corruption, etc – as many as four times. The last days we declined activities so we could have time to ourselves. Our guide is a wonderful guy, he just needs to step back a bit. In my opinion, a top-notch tour company will train guides to be sensitive to guest clues. We tried several times to politely indicate we needed some silence or time to talk independently. We regret making a personal comment like this, but we feel our enjoyment of Ecuador was reduced by a lack of periods of silence. read less

I had 8 days and I went all the way from Quito to Guayaquil, visiting Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, Baños, and Cuenca along the way. The tour company arranged for me what I wanted, nature and hiking, great views and experiences, culturally significant sights and more. Make sure you tell the tour company what you want with details so nothing is left out. But, the best thing about the trip was my tour guide, Ismael Paredes. He was very knowledgeable about all the sites we visited, local flora and fauna, and great places to eat - recommending local dishes to try. He did a wonderful job driving me all over the country, in some pretty scary fog and over high mountain passes. We had an enjoyable week together talking about life in Ecuador and sharing experiences with each other. The driving never got boring. I immensely enjoyed my trip to Ecuador. read less

Worked with Jeremy at Gulliver. Jeremy organized my trip. Before saying anything about him, I would like to note that I am a detailed oriented, somewhat demanding, and at times irritating client who generally has a lot of questions (many of which I repeat periodically). 

Jeremy was simply outstanding. His patience is unparalleled. He not only tolerated me, but made it seem like he was almost enjoying it! I rarely run out of questions - with him I did. He worked hard to make the trip according to my needs and wishes and made it a perfect experience. It was my best trip ever - largely because of him. we could tell him what we wanted to see and what we didn't want to see. 

when we had a problem with a hotel in sta cruz island, i complained to the gulliver agent. he immediately took care of the problem without hesitation. 

someone was always there to pick us up from the boat when we went from island to island and take us to the hotel. our luggage was taken care of as well. 

i do not hesitate to tell anyone interested in visitng ecuador and the galapagos to use gulliver. my agent was jeremy le cam. he was absolutely the best! read less
