A major part of Bolivia’s landmass is part of the Amazon.
To be precise, 66% of Bolivia’s territory is attributed to the Amazon Basin, which is equal to 724.000km2(280.000 sq mi).
Of this vast area, roughly two thirds is covered by forests and about half of Bolivia’s forested areas primarily consist of rainforests.
There are large untouched Amazon regions in Bolivia, that are the most versitile both culturally and ethnically. An estimated 30% of its inhabitants are indigenous people, and the flora and fauna is one of the most diverse on the whole planet.
Touristically speaking, the Amazon region is the perfect place for an adventure and one of the most interessting places one can visit.
Vast areas are untouched even till date and Bolivia tours packages offermore than the tours in Brazil. This is because they are not only cheaper, but also because of a higher biodiversity, and many of the primal rainforests have been preserved.
To get there, you can either choose bus or plane.
There are two roads leading into the Amazon district, one from La Paz and one from Santa Cruise and you´re looking at 14-18 h of an, lets say adventurous bus ride which will set you back around 10$. A more convenient way is to take a 45 min flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque that will cost you around 80$.
Rurrenabaque is the most common starting point for tours into the Amazon and you can choose from an abundance of offers.
The town itself has not too much to offer, but the cheap tours and close proximity to the Rio Beni make it an excellent starting point to enter the jungle.
Once you in “Rurre” you basically have two different tour options.
The first one is a traditional Jungle Trek, where you will explore the rainforest by foot. You may see fewer animals on this tour, but you will enjoy the beautiful interior of the Amazon and learn about different plants and trees that grow there. During many tours you stay in lodges along the trek and will experience the Amazon as you have always imagined it.
The other tour option is a Pampas tour, where you will go by boat into the wetlands of the Amazon. The chance to see wildlife is much higher than inside the jungle and you will spend most of your time in the boat exploring the areas.
You will see lots of animals on this trip and will stay in an accommodation on the river.
Highlights of the tour are swimming with dolphins, going alligator spotting at night, feeding monkeys and get up early to watch the sunset above the Amazonian rainforest.
