Climate in Ecuador is very diverse and primarily influenced by the different altitudes of this country. This causes in high regional temperature differences, but due to Ecuador’s geographical location on the Equator, they remain quite constant over the year, which makes it visitable all year round. In general one distinguishes between two seasons – rain and dry season.
At the Galapagos Islands, the Highlands and the Coast, the rain season last from December until the beginning of May. In the Amazonas are the wettest months June, July and August, even when the rainy season already starts in February. But sudden occurring intense, tropical rainfalls are also in the dry season pretty normal in the rainforest region. Furthermore, reigns here all over the year a high level of humidity. The precipitation partially is around 5000mm.
In comparison to the rest of Ecuador, are the Highlands rather cold with a mild spring climate all over the year. The best time to travel in the Highlands is from June to September, when the sun is often shining all day long. Between the end of January until May it rains the most with torrential rainfalls, hailstorms and thunderstorms. The rainy season is partially interrupted by the “veranillo”, Indian summer, sometime between October and January. During this time returns the summer for a while and brings sun intensive hours in the afternoon. In general one could describe the climate in the highlands like this: Spring in the morning, summer at midday, autumn and rain in the afternoon and mild winter nights with temperatures around 5 ºC. So definitely do not forget a warm pullover, a rain jacket and a hat as protection for the strong solar radiation.
At the coast, during the rainy months, you can reckon with increasing temperatures and a sudden multiplying of mosquitoes and other insects. Bring mosquito repellent and sun screen! In the north of the coast region, around Esmeralda, means this sun, in the afternoon and heavy rainfalls during the nights. The summer months are more dry but also very cloudy in the morning. In the south, the dry and hot coast area, the months July, August and September are colder; the temperatures could fall during this time up to 12 degrees. In December and January then it´s mostly pretty sunny, ideal to get a nice and long lasting tan.
