What is Carnival?
Carnival is a holiday celebrated all over the world, especially in areas with a large Catholic presence. The holiday occurs before the ritualistic season of Lent, often in February or Early March and is a way to express yourself and feel united. During Carnival large public celebrations and parades along with uncommon clothes and masks are no exception.
Carnival in Ecuador
Worldwide people celebrate carnival with many minor differences. Carnival is a national holiday in Ecuador and also has its own unique way to celebrate it. In the neighbourhoods there are often parades of modified cars or trucks, along with people dancing in colourful costumes and masks. There are many parties during the carnival festival. One of the most special sights are the bands with traditional instruments playing Andean songs. Some regions, especially in smaller towns celebrate cultures across Ecuador, by wearing a specific style of dress, skirt, or hat.
Many locals take advantage of this holiday. It allows them to get away from their busy daily life and dive into some well-deserved leisure. Along popular excursions are a cruise to the Galapagos islands or climbing the Cotopaxi for the satisfying feeling that comes with summiting it.
Ecuadorian Carnival Traditions
It is tradition to throw water or carioca, a coloured foam at friends, family, and passers-by. When walking the streets, it is very likely you will become wet or covered in foam. In bigger cities people prefer carioca, while in smaller villages eggs are also an option. This may sound not as fun as it is, but when well-prepared it is a festivity that you can not miss. Make sure that your electronic devices and valuables are in a plastic bag or drybag. Do not wear your most expensive clothes and you are good to go!
