The Illinizas mountains are two peaks located 55km (34 miles) southwest of Quito. Illiniza Sur (5250m/17224 ft) is famous for being the sixth highest mountain in the country, whilst Illiniza Norte (5126m/16817 ft) is The Eighth Highest in Ecuador.
The southern peak has a glacier and because of this, the southern peak is more technical in comparison to the Northern mountain. The southern peak offers several challenging and demanding routes.
This 2-day climb starts at night from the Refuge “Nuevos Horizontes” at the altitude of 4670m (15321ft). Our tour includes a professional bilingual guide, mountain base support and rescue, equipment, and transportation. The Illinizas South climbing tour is an amazing experience for climbers as an acclimatization mountain.
*The mountaineering insruction includes: Crampon techniques, ice axe use, self arrest, roped team travel
Climbing high altitudes needs previous training, if you are not correctly acclimatized you can suffer from different altitude illnesses.
We strongly reccomend to make acclimatization programs before you can reach the highest peaks in Ecuador.
Special climbing equipment included
*Reasonably day pack(35 liters) (needed from the refuge to Cotopaxi summit to accommodate plenty of water, crampons, warm gear including puffer jacket etc)
**Large rucksack (50-70 liter) (only needed to transfer gear from the bus drop off at the Cotopaxi base up to the refuge)
