Shaun is from Liverpool, northern England, which you notice due to his strong accent. After his formation as Sports- and Fitnesstherapist, he rather liked to become a soldier in the military to do what he likes most: Sports! He was signed in for seven years and could practice sports all day long, to stay in good shape, when he needed to go on the front. Shaun also spent five months in Afghanistan during his time in the military, “it was a very good feeling to do the job, you are paid for and I was able to talk a lot to the local people to hear their opinions about the war and the situation in their country. That was really interesting.”, he mentioned. A lot of soldiers who worked in Combat Zones, have mental problems when they return to their country, but Shaun does not. In contrary, he is a very positive, gentle and open person and always in a good mood. I noticed this, during my time in our Hosteria PapaGayo, where he stayed during his acclimatization program.
After his time in the military he started to work for a british oil company in Irak, where he works eight weeks in a row and then has two or more weeks off. This allows him to travel a lot. Thanks to his shifts, he has already travelled to several countries, like Mexico, Kenia, Germany, Bulgaria and now Ecuador. Shaun booked his trip to Ecuador just one week in advance and therefore needed some help from local professionals to plan it very well. Within his week in Ecuador, he went to Mitad del Mundo, Cotopaxi, Baños, Horseback riding, Otavalo, Centro Historico and Quilotoa. When I first saw him, he just came back from the Horseback Riding tour. Since he never sat on horse before, I guessed they just walked, but no, they galopped almost the whole time. Normally, you need a few lessons to learn to sit on the horse, to not fall down and how to move. But he did everything intuitivley and with the help and assistance of our guide. For me it was unbelievable, but he said: “Well, I learn very fast.”
When I asked him, why he came to Ecuador, he said “I always wanted to visit Latin America, because of the culture, the people and the landscape but I decided to go especially to Ecuador, because a friend in Mexico told me how many sportive activities you can do in this small country. Therefore I contacted Gulliver Expeditions, to create me a special program with lots of sports.”
On his last day, Shaun wanted to enjoy the “Fiestas de Quito”, which take place in the first week of December for celebrating the foundation of the city. On Saturday evening he went back to England. Right on the next day he already flew to Irak to work again.
But he will not be out of the continent too long, thanks to his work, he collects lots of free miles and therefore he will visit Peru and Brasil in February. In Brasil he wants to see the carneval, which is probably to be the best carneval on earth but for sure his experience in Ecuador will be part of his best memories.
He mentioned: “I really enjoyed my time in Ecuador and in the Hosteria PapaGayo.”0
