Coming into December and looking back on 2020, we see a year that was full of unexpected surprises. It revealed a world without travel for some time, but in tourism, you can always count on adventurous spirits who are ready and waiting to travel to their next destination as soon as they can.
It is a year to be grateful for technology, allowing us to work remotely and continue to create one of a kind experiences. Among the chaos Covid-19 sparked, there were many silver linings and positives we can appreciate, along with the unexpected and out of the ordinary time we were given to be able to reflect, both professionally and personally.
Allow us to share with you our highlights from 2020.
Getting Our Guests Home Safe and Sound
With the appearance of Covid in Ecuador and foreseeing the government’s decision to close borders, our number one priority was to get all of our guests in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, back home as soon and as safely as possible before the closing of borders. Swiftly contacting and localizing all guests, we arranged new flights, cancelations and refunds as soon as we could. Our guests felt safe in our hands knowing we had their best interests in mind during such an unexpected impact that affected the entire world.
A NEW REALITY – REMOTE OFFICES WORKING AT HOME
Working from home brings a new perspective and new challenges, but nothing we could not handle! Balancing work and home became a newly mastered skill while improving our ability to adapt to new environments. Weekly scheduled meetings became the norm, teamwork and cooperation were vital, and over time the Gulliver team bond became stronger than ever.
A CHANGE IN POLICY – KEEPING OUR GUESTS IN MIND
Once we were working from home and settled in, it was time to reach out and stay in touch with our clients and let them know that they were our priority. The next step was to contact each and every guest and let them know about the new policy we created in order to help ease the transistion of cancelled trips and transform them into postponed travel plans for the future. Our policy allowed guests a 2 year window to reschedule any program and our terms and conditions have been updated since to include any Covid affected programs.
WORKATION – ALL YOU EVER DREAMED AND MORE
It is not a new concept, but it has grown in popularity since Covid came into our world. Workation means going to work, but in a location great for vacation. For example, imagine working in an environment that allows you to create the perfect balance of work and play. The term, “work hard, play hard” has never held more truth in a workation getaway!
At Hosteria Papagayo, you are located in an entirely natural environment, allowing you to concentrate deeper, allowing you the time and space to explore and take on new adventures in the Ecuadorian Andes.
ENGAGING AND EDUCATIONAL WEBINARS
Not only are our guests important to us, but so are all of our partners. Ecuador and its four regions of the Amazon, Sierra, Pacific Coast and Galapagos Islands have so much to offer. Each with so many sites and activities to discover, it can be overwhelming.
That is why we took advantage of this time to offer free webinars to all of our partners. Each webinar was offered a week apart from one another and we discussed various topics that you can find uploaded on our Gulliver web page for your own viewing!
With so much down time, we were also able to dedicate time towards improving Papagayo Cotopaxi Lodge. Thre new cabins were built, their names are Libertad, Ternura and Nostalgia. Book today for your post-covid travels!
The Ecuador Image Gallery was a project created out of the need to promote art and culture in the Mariscal neighborhood of Quito. It provides a space for both professional and amateur photographers to exhibit their work in an open-air exhibition with the opportunity to promote their craft. Themes have varied over the years with aerial shots, landscapes, volcanoes, adventure and still life. The purpose of each theme is to highlight the beauty of Ecuador in each region and the great amount of diversity that can be seen in the country.
This year’s theme was provided by Sanitago Salinas whose works of art were called “Vibrations”. He is an Ecuadorian photographer who began his search for light while studying Graphic Design. His knowledge led him to work at the news outlet El Comercio and finally, with all the experience gained, he created his own media outlet in the city of Ambato, Mi Ciudad magazine. In February of 2018, Santiago won the Photopills “Photo of the Day” world award and in the same year one of his photographs was selected among the best in the world by the Carrete Digital magazine.
If you want to see more of Santiago’s amazing works of art, visit the Ecuador Image Gallery Facebook page!
Our take on travel is to keep up with the mindset of our guests and their adventurous spirits who are looking for freedom in the open, wild air of the Andes. We specifically created new programs keeping in mind their sense of adventure, while implementing wellness and nature aspects…especially after having been cooped up in quarantine for a few months!

At Lucy in the Andes, we address issues like teen pregnancies, education and healthy relationships in order to give women in Andean communities the power to make their own decisions when it comes to their lives, bodies and so they can live a life to their fullest potential.
Our team is comprised of a sexual education teacher, a lawyer, a midwife, a doctor and an economist. With their help we strive to help these women in as many aspects of their lives as possible.
In 2020, we were able to realize another successful workshop in the communites discussing topics regarding positive discipline for their children, sex education and healthy relationships, self-esteem and self-confidence and how to identify warning signs in child development.
At Lucy in the Andes, we realize that the potential to make a positive impact is extraordinary, and we look forward with great motivation to the continuation of these workshops throughout the Andes.
This upcoming 2021 will surely be a year we are all looking forward to. We can take all that we have learned with us into the new year and apply it to amazing adventures and experiences, not likely to be forgotten. We cannot wait to welcome more guests back to the incredible places we offer in South America.
