The Sajama Volcano is the highest of all of Bolivia, known as the Bolivian ceiling. It is about 20 km from the volcanoes of Parinacota and Pomerape. The main access point is crossing the border of Chile, near the Chungará Lake. You can also reach it near the capital of Bolivia, La Paz.
The voluminous volcano is part of a protected area, the Sajama National Park of Bolivia and oldest national park of the country. In the park is the Queñua Forests (Polylepis tarapacana) that stand out in this area, watched over by the giant. In some places the forest reaches above 5,200 meters above sea level, constituting the highest woody formation in the world. There is a great abundance of Andean fauna like vicuñas – similar to the llama. Pumas, Quirquinchos, Andean mountain cats, and large variety of birds.
The best time to summit Sajama, the Andean masterpiece, is between July and September. This is mostly because there is more snowfall between October and April. An interesting fact on Sajama, this is where the world’s highest soccer match was ever played!
