The volcano Illinizas South (5250m / 17224ft) is the sixth highest mountain in the country. It is located 55km (34 miles) southwest of Quito.
The southern peak is deglaciating. This caused by global warming and it is affecting its ice condition. Thus the southern peak is now reserved for experienced ice climbers. Hence expertise in ice techniques is required for this climb. The southern peak suggests several challenging and demanding routes. This 2-day climb starts at night from the refuge Nuevos Horizontes at an altitude of 4670m (15321ft). We offer a professional bilingual guide, mountain base support/rescue, equipment and transportation.
*The mountaineering insruction includes: Crampon techniques, ice axe use, self arrest, roped team travel
Climbing high altitudes needs previous training, if you are not correctly acclimatized you can suffer from different altitude illnesses.
We strongly reccomend to make acclimatization programs before you can reach the highest peaks in Ecuador.
Special climbing equipment included

**Large rucksack (50-70 liter) (only needed to transfer gear from the bus drop off at the Cotopaxi base up to the refuge)
