The Condoriri in means “Head of the Condor” and it is possibly one of the most beautiful mountains in the entire Cordillera Real of the Andes. It was originally called this by the Spanish conquistadors.
Climbers looking to summit Condoriri should be experienced and well-acclimated. Condoriri climbs can be quickly accessed from the city of La Paz. It is a very popular climb in Bolivia and a must for all foreign visitors. The national park that includes the Condoriri within its limits bears the same name: Tuni Condoriri National Park; the snow-capped peak is without a doubt one of the most imposing and highest mountains in the sector. The Park has various alternatives for rock climbing, ice climbing, and mixed climbing.
Condoriri itself has two massifs, one on its left and one on its right seen from the Chiarkhota Lagoon (Alas Norte and Sur respectively), which resemble from a distance the shape of a gigantic condor pretending to fly (hence its name).
The sector was first explored by Europeans when the English mountaineer William Martin Conway entered it in the late nineteenth century. Conway said that as night fell clouds of condors swooped over their heads.
