Upon arrival to Bolivia at the airport El Alto – La Paz two mountains surprise you from the moment you arrive with the beauty of their outlines against the skyline. One is the imposing mass of the Illimani located to the southeast and the other, of course, is the silhouette of the Huayna Potosí ice pyramid located to the northwest.
Climbing in Bolivia on the Huayna Potosí will have you reach an altitude of 6,088 meters (19,973 ft). Huayna Potosi means “Cerro Joven” or young hill. It is just 25 km (15,5 miles) away from the Bolivian city, of La Paz. Thanks to its proximity and accessibility by the normal route, it is one of the most popular mountains to climb in Bolivia and the central Andes. It is a great goal for climbers seeking to ascend a 6,000-meter (19,685 ft) summit. It is meant for experienced mountaineers as the route can be difficult, but ever so beautiful.
Departure from the city of La Paz by private transportation to the Zongo platform (4,700 meters/15,419 ft) is approximately 2 hours of travel. After a walk of 2 to 3 hours of ascension to the high rock field at 5,130 meters (16,830 ft). Night at the refuge.
After breakfast, very early in the morning, you continue your ascent towards the summit passing through the Argentine countryside at 5,500 meters (18,044 ft). The ascent to the summit at 6,088 meters (19,973 ft) requires approximately 6 hours to reach and another 4 hours to descend. You will descend to the base camp at the Zongo platform where our transportation awaits for the return to the city of La Paz.
Optional day 1: This option is for inexperienced guests where our guides will give them climbing training in the Old Huayna Potosí Glacier for approximately 3 to 4 hours and then descend to the base camp. Night at the refuge.
