llampu is the northernmost mountain of the La Paz portion of the Cordillera. Overlooking the sleepy Bolivian village of Sorata, it stands tall and proud. Together with Ancohuma, it makes up a single, compact peak in the Andes. There is a passing resemblance to the Himalayas. Among Bolivia’s peaks higher than 6,000 metres (19,685 feet), mountaineers rank it first in terms of difficulty.
The southwest side, which has snowy slopes of up to 65 degrees, is the most accessible. To get there, climbers must first reach a high base camp on the massif’s northern side. Accessible from the western side of the mountain, alternate routes include rock faces, scree slopes, and even third-class scrambles; one such alternative is the “Route of the Germans” on the southwest side.
