Illampu is the northernmost peak of the La Paz part of the Cordillera. It rises majestically above the small Bolivian town of Sorata. It is a mountain in the Andes that forms a single compact mountain with Ancohuma. It slightly resembles something out of the Himalayas. Mountaineers consider it the most difficult mountain to climb of all those over 6,000 meters (19,685 ft) in Bolivia.
The easiest route is found on the southwest side, with snowy slopes of up to 65º. It is accessed by a high base camp located on the northern side of the massif. Other routes are those such as the “Route of the Germans” located on the southwest side, both are accessed from the western side of the massif and include rock faces, scree slopes, and even third-class scrambles.
