Early September sees the Yamor Festival in Otavalo, famous for its craft market. It celebrates the corn harvest and honors
the goddess of fertility. Festivities include parades, dances, sports competitions, music and dance contests, as well as the tasting of traditional dishes.
On septiembre 23 & 24, the Mama Negra festival takes place in Latacunga, one of the biggest festivities in Ecuador. It is a celebration in honor of the Virgen de la Merced (Virgin of Mercy), who is said to have stopped an eruption of Cotopaxi Volcan in 1742. Nowadays, it celebrates the mixture of indigenous, Spanish and African cultures. The participants dress up and parade through the streets, accompanied by traditional music and dances.
