The Pisco mountain is an achievable climb for anyone who is interesting in climbing in Peru. It is best to be well acclimatized, physically fit and of course, looking forward to an adventure in the Andes of Peru. It is a suitable climb for novice climbers and can also be a great challenge for experienced climbers. Similar to other Gulliver Expedition Peru climbing programs, this mountain is great for beginners and experts.
Before you begin to climb in Peru, you can also start in Ecuador with an acclimatization program specifically designed for mountaineers who are looking to expand their horizons. Acclimatize properly and continue to work your way down the Andes and mountain climb in Peru.
This program begins after you arrive into Huaraz and into the town of Pitec. The three days prior to the Pisco climb you will arrive into Lima, Peru. The second day you will then be transferred accordingly to take a bus to Huaraz in northern Peru. Finally, the following day after breakfast you will be driven to Pitec and will begin the rest of the 5 day Pisco climbing program.
Our driver will pick you up from Lima Airport then transfer to your hotel in Lima Miraflores (depend your arrival time to Lima).
Departure in the morning will be transferred from your hotel to the bus station. The bus takes about 8 to 9 hours to Huaraz.
After breakfast in the hotel you will be picked up and drive for 1 hour where you will be brought to Pitec. After you will hike for 3 hours to visit Churup Lake where you will later return to Pitec. There a minivan will be waiting for you to return to Huaraz, about 6 – 7 hours.
Passing by the famous twin lakes of Llanganuco you will load your gears onto porter donkeys to climb 2½ hours to the Pisco Base Camp at 4600 meters. There is a refugio there where you can buy beer, wine and hot food. If you are a novice climber, you can organize some basic instruction in the afternoon with your guide.
Crossing over loose ground and large moraine rocks at times, the porter donkeys won’t be able to travel this way. You will need to carry your personal gear, climbing gear, clothes and sleeping bag. The porters will be carrying the tents, meals and they will help set up at base camp. Hike is about 3 hours.
You leave early and climb about 40 minutes on moraine fields until reaching the glacier where you will begin to use your crampons and ropes. Most of the way is not very steep or technically difficult although the altitude does make it a challenge. There can sometimes be some short, steeper sections where you will be assisted. You will try to arrive on the summit to see the sun rise. It will be about 5 hours to the broad summit where there is plenty of room to walk around, appreciate the amazing surrounding mountains and take photos.
From the summit, fantastic views of the close by peaks of the Huascaran (6768m), Chopicalqui (6354m), Huandoy (6160m), Pirámide (5885m), and Artesonraju (6025m). You will descend to Moraine Camp, where you will prepared hot soup and have an hour rest, collect your gear and return to base Camp. In total, there will be 9 to 12 hours of hiking for the day.
After breakfast you will go down to Cebollapampa where your bus will be waiting for you passing the Llanganuco Lakes. You will go to check in at Huascaran National Park and then Yungay and finally Huaraz at approximately 2 or 3 in the afternoon you will be in Huaraz.
After breakfast in the morning you will be taken to the bus that will return to Lima.
